Benamocarra
BENAMOCARRA, a village in the Axarquia.
The birthplace of the famous composer Eduardo Ocon, Benamocarra, is one of the villages in the Axarquia region, part of the Ruta del Sol y del Aguacate. It is located 4 km from the commercial center of Velez-Málaga and 41 km from the city of Málaga. The award-winning beach of Torre del Mar can be found just 11 km away. A delightful place to stay, nestled between the mountains and the sea.
With Arabic origins (the name of the town means sons of Mukarran), the town center has uneven, sloping streets with houses adapting to the terrain. Notable features of this town include the Iglesia de Santa Ana - a 16th-century construction with a Mudéjar bell tower (characteristic of the region); at the highest part of the town is the Plaza del Calvario, la Plaza de la Constitución, and the Plaza de Eduardo Ocón. The house where the mentioned composer was born is marked with a commemorative plaque and is worth a visit. (https://youtu.be/mpXqFqz3JIw?si=E7lOjsDZPxssVZWf)
Benamocarra offers an extensive and varied menu of traditional dishes to try, such as las migas de pan (fried breadcrumbs), gazpacho (cold soup), gazpachuelo (cold soup made with potatoes, eggs, cod, and lemon), Gachas (a rich stew), and el frito con morcilla (fried egg with blood sausage).
In the realm of craftsmanship, many objects are crafted here using plant fibers and reeds.
For those wanting to experience the traditional festivals of this municipality, they should mark the following dates in their calendar: May 15, the day of the Romería de San Isidro, which starts at the church of Santa Ana and ends in the so-called Coto Escolar; Holy Week, with the celebration of "la pava" on Easter Sunday; the first week of September, with bonfires lit both in the town center and in the countryside; and the third Sunday of October, with the patron saint festivities in honor of Cristo de la Salud.
