Comares
COMARES is one of the highest and most beautiful white villages in Andalusia, situated at 739 meters above sea level. The journey from Malaga airport takes less than an hour, while the nearest town, Velez-Malaga, and the coastal town of Torre del Mar are just a half-hour drive away.
Comares is often referred to as the "Balcony of the Axarquía" due to its elevated position on a mountain ridge, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside and the Mediterranean Sea in the distance. The village features narrow, cobbled winding streets, arches, beautiful white houses, and the remains of a Moorish castle at the highest point. Take a village walk, follow the blue ceramic footprints, and immerse yourself in the Moorish history of this charming village.
The history of Comares is deeply rooted in its Moorish past, and traces of this influence are visible in the architecture and layout of the village. The castle, originally built by the Moors, played a strategic role in the region's history. Throughout the village, you'll find colorful ceramic plaques depicting Comares' significant place in history, dating back to the third century BC.
Today, Comares is a popular destination for tourists looking to experience traditional Andalusian life away from the busy coastal areas. Visitors can explore the historic streets, enjoy panoramic views, and experience the rich cultural heritage of the region. There are bars and restaurants, a supermarket, a bakery, a pharmacy, an ATM, and a post office in the village.
The village square has an open terrace on one side, with spectacular views extending to the Mediterranean Sea. Just outside the village is a famous 436-meter zip line, the longest in Spain in a natural area. Note that you need to make a reservation. (+34 697 218 289)
