Periana

PERIANA is known for its beautiful natural surroundings and breathtaking views, on one side the Sierra de Alhama and on the other side Lake Viñuela. The area is also renowned for its olive groves and the production of high-quality olive oil. Delicious peaches are grown in the vicinity of Periana, and every summer there is the 'peach festival.' The village itself boasts typical Andalusian architecture, with narrow streets and whitewashed houses. Periana is a popular destination for tourists seeking tranquility and nature, as well as for gastronomy enthusiasts. The stunning natural surroundings make it a paradise for hikers, in particular.

The village has a viewpoint offering an impressive view of the Axarquía area. There are restaurants, bakeries, butchers, supermarkets, banks, a pharmacy, and a medical center.

Among the main monuments are the church of San Isidro Labrador, erected after the great earthquake, as well as the entire neighborhood around it, in neo-Mudéjar style, with a brick and masonry facade. The square of the spring, full of history and formerly the center of the social and daily life of the village. The old municipal laundry, a place that evokes many memories for the older residents of the village and where many children now play on warm days.

Less than 3 km from the town center are the Baths of Vilo, which in the 18th and 19th centuries were considered one of the most important in Andalusia. The Arabs used them for the healing properties of the calcium and nitrogen-rich water. There are prehistoric sites in the vicinity, Cerro de Capellanía, El Fuerte, and Llano de la Matanza.
